I'm a member but I don't live in the Ann Arbor area. How can I get an ATM or Visa Check card?

If you have a savings account, you may request an ATM card by mail or fax. If you have a checking account, you must order a Visa Check card instead.  The Visa Check card will function as both a debit and an ATM card.  (Call the Member Service Phone Center at 734-662-8200 or 800-968-8628 for details.) The card and a personal identification number (PIN), selected by the computer, will be mailed. Expect the card in about a week. The PIN will arrive shortly after in a separate mailing.

What is the difference between an ATM card and a Visa check card?

With an ATM card, you can withdraw and deposit funds at various ATM machines and you are able to make purchases at some stores and gas stations using a Personal Identification Number (PIN). With a Visa Check card you can do all that and more. It can be used at millions of merchant locations worldwide wherever Visa is accepted and the money is deducted from your checking account. So you don't pay interest but have the convenience of a credit card.

My ATM card and/or Visa Check card is not working. Why would that happen?

There could be several reasons:

  1. Symbols on the ATM (such as NYCE, CIRRUS), don't match the symbols on  your ATM or Visa Check card. (COOP, PLUS)
  2. There might be some damage to the magnetic strip on your card.
  3. You might have a delinquent loan.
  4. You might be using the wrong PIN.
  5. Your card might have been blocked for various reasons (lost, stolen, invalid address, etc.) Contact the Accounting Department at 734-662-8200 or (800-968-8628).

Is a Visa Check (debit) card a credit card?

No. A debit card (Visa Check card) is not a credit card. It can be used at millions of merchant locations worldwide where Visa debit cards are accepted. When you use the debit card to make a purchase, the funds are always deducted from your checking account. When you use your Visa Check card, you may select a credit or debit option. If you select the credit option, your signature is required and it takes 2 to 3 business days for the money to be withdrawn from your checking account. If you select the debit option, you enter your PIN and the funds are deducted from your checking account immediately.

Can I use my Visa Check card to access my share savings account?

Yes, at an ATM you can use your Visa Check card to access savings or checking. However, if you use your Visa debit card at a store or restaurant, your checking account will be accessed for the funds, not savings.

Can I use my ATM card in other countries and states?

Yes, the Visa Check card can be used in ATMs in other countries.  ATM systems are generally reliable, but they vary from country to country. For your protection, we recommend you take at least one other plastic card (in addition to your Visa Check card) when traveling outside of the United States. Contact us if you are planning to travel overseas so we may discuss additional options for accessing cash while traveling.

Are deposits or transfers I make into my checking account available immediately to cover purchases I make with my Visa Check card?

Yes. Our Visa Check card program is online which means you can access your available funds immediately.
